Back At It

After a couple weeks of holiday cheer, days off and over-indulgence in every sense of the word, things are back to normal today. Always such a sad thing to know the holidays are over, but we're looking forward to getting up and back to a schedule.

New Year's was spent with neighbours, lots of snacks and a rousing and offensive game of Cards Against Humanity (henceforth known as CaH). It's always great to find people with like-minded humour - aka horrible, horrible people like us. :) Shortly after midnight we heard a lot of commotion outside and there was a huge parade of all the RCMP trucks, fire trucks, cars, and snowmobiles in town. They went up and down every street with lights blinking, horns blaring and plenty of wishes for a Happy New Year! It was fun to watch - you certainly don't get anything like that at home!

The rest of the weekend was spent lazing around catching up on the shows we PVR'ed, reading all the new books Santa brought us and some friendly competition with our new Kinect games. It was a lovely start to 2013!

Today didn't start off great since the car wouldn't start no matter what we tried, so we had to wait for a boost - and even then it didn't catch on the first try. It's -50 with the windchill today, so perhaps it was too cold - or perhaps it needed some time to get back into the routine after the holiday hiatus as well. Either way, we eventually got it to start and off we went. The snow is pretty blow-y out there, and the airport has already canceled its morning flights, so who knows what the rest of the day will bring.

The sun has been rising a little earlier and setting a little later these days, so instead of sunlight from 10-2, we are starting to get it for another half hour or so...it's been a lot tougher for me to handle the darkness (it's a strange habit to remember to turn on the porch light after I leave the house at lunch or else it's too dark and hard to see the keys when we get home at 5), but Jeff says he doesn't notice it as much. The handful of vitamin D pills we take every day helps though; I noticed I was significantly more sluggish before I upped our dose to 10,000 IU.

We have finally eaten 95% of our leftovers, save a tiny bit of turkey breast that I'll have with a salad for lunch today and some ham that I'll make ham salad (a childhood favourite of his...and something that is growing on me!) for him to take sandwiches for lunch, and that's it!! I couldn't take it anymore over the weekend and just had to cook something - so dinner one night was steamed mussels in a garlic butter and white wine sauce served with pomme frites (because you can't call them french fries when you're being fancy and eating mussels)...we used up the rest of the dinner rolls from Christmas to soak up the delicious sauce, so it was a great vessel for leftovers! Not cooking for a week was both a good thing and a bad thing, because the lazy side of me loved it but the creative side of me is itching to get back into it!

We decided that aside from truly experiencing what the North has to offer, our other resolution is to live better lives. Sounds broad and vague, but we want to be better in all sorts of ways - from how much we sleep, to what we eat/do and how we interact with others. It's an all-encompassing way of life and we're hoping to be better people because of it.
