Essentials

I started looking into weight restrictions for our luggage when I heard that our stuff didn't get loaded onto the truck until this morning (ummmm, we're definitely going to beat it at this rate??). So I started thinking about stuff that we should bring to hold us over until our things arrive...and the list felt really long in my head, but now that I see it written out, I feel like I'm forgetting key things.

Since we are flying on First Air, the baggage restrictions are pretty limited because we're going to be on a smaller plane. Basically, if we don't want to have to pay for any excess fees (though they may be cheaper than paying to courier/ship things up separately and we'd be guaranteed to have the baggage with us), we both get 2 bags at 44 pounds each. That sounds like a lot, but after going through the process of packing up our house and under-estimating our belongings, I don't want to take any chances.

I think we're going to have to borrow someone's scale next week and do "practice packs" to see what we're looking at in terms of weight.

Below is a list of things that I can think of as essential to get us through the first while that we're there in case our things haven't arrived yet.

Essentials
  1. Clothes & shoes
  2. Toiletries (hopefully our travel bag-sized items are enough)
    1. Don't forget shower poof!!
  3. Towels
  4. Telephone for house
  5. Laptop, iPad, chargers
  6. Sheets (a blanket will be too bulky, so hopefully it will be warm enough)
  7. Pillows? Is that going to have the same problem as the bulkiness of the blanket?
  8. Umbrella (I am quite certain we forgot to pack one)
  9. Prescriptions (obviously!)
Can you think of anything to add to the list that you can't live without? *Food and things I won't bother with, because we'll just have to bite the bullet and go to the grocery store to hold us over - I don't want to "waste" my weight allowance on pantry items. This seems like a really short list??

Help!!

  1. I think these bags would help with the clothes/sheets/pillows. Might be worth to take a look see. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=16738735

  2. I've always eyeballed those...apparently sometimes they go on sale for 1/3 of the price!

I'm just worried they will puff up again in my luggage and pop my suitcase open! (What? That's a totally valid concern!)

  4. Re.: "Since we are flying on First Air ... we'd be guaranteed to have the baggage with us..." As a Northerner since 1982... my mouth is sore from the laughter the mere idea of First Air NOT loosing your baggage... but best of luck.. Baker Lake has MUCH more snow than rain.. so you can leave the umbrella behind.. the wind is so strong when it rains.. what you really need is a good rain coat... and buy your parka in the GTA.. you will not find the quality/choice in Nunavut...

  5. Uh oh - you're stressing me out about our already-stressful flight!! I just don't think we can make it with just carry ons, but maybe we'll be lucky because we're only making 1 stop and no plane changes?? Hope so!!

We already got our parka, but we've been looking for a good raincoat and haven't found one yet. Any particular brands/features you'd recommend??
